What
is Acupuncture?
Traditional
Chinese Medicine, incorporating Acupuncture has gained widespread acknowledgement
as a powerful form of medicine in the West over the last 20 years.
Acupuncture is the insertion of very fine needles on the body's surface,
in order to influence physiological functioning of the body. TCM practitioners
work on the premise that a universal life energy called Chi or Qi present
in every living creature. This energy circulates throughout the body along
specific pathways that are called meridians. As long as this energy flows
freely throughout the meridians, health is maintained, but once the flow
of energy is blocked, the system is disrupted and pain and illness occur.
Acupuncture works to rebalance and restore normal functions by stimulating
certain points on the meridians in order to free up the Chi energy.
Disharmony
comes about from injury, disease, and improper diet and activities. While
these factors must be addressed for long-term results, acupuncture can
encourage a healing response in many conditions. Nutritional advice based
on TCM theory and lifestyle advice further aid the healing response.
