Indian Head Massage

Indian Head massage is based on ancient Ayurvedic healing techniques. It is one of the most widely practiced complementary therapies in the West and involves massaging the head, face, neck, shoulders and upper back. Head massage has long been an integral part of Indian life; men would often receive a head massage as part of their grooming at the barbers and women would routinely rub warm, richly scented oils into each other’s hair and scalp as a part of a normal beauty routine. The technique offered in spas throughout the world today is due to the efforts of Indian osteopath and massage therapist, Narendra Mehta. He brought the technique to the West in the 1970s following a growing frustration that most massage techniques in the West, including full body massage, did not include the neck and shoulders.

What happens during a session?

Indian Head massage can be given to a client fully clothed, either seated on lying on a massage table. Oils are optional for this type of massage, and so it is popular as a workplace massage. The duration can range from 15 minutes to 60 minutes.
